Architects Rego + Youngquist Completed a market and operational analysis for the St. Michael-Albertville for a 37,000 square foot expansion of their existing ice arena.  The stakeholders in the arena are the cities of Albertville and St. Michal, the STMA School District #885 and the STMA Youth Hockey Association.

The study became necessary as the demand for the existing arena outgrew the services currently available.  The school district's hockey programs have outgrown the arena's ability to accommodate their increasing number of spectators.  The number of participants in the Youth Hockey Association has increased and the resulting number of teams and their needs for ice time has far surpassed the time available.  There is also a desire by several community groups to create new activities that require the use of a refrigerated ice surface or sometimes a non-ice, exhibition/assembly facility.

The study's methodology including the following critical components

  • Inverview the stakeholders and other users of the building
  • Develop a list of propsed additional arena spaces
  • Maintain consistent communication with the Arena Board and stakeholders
  • Procure arena related building code and zoning criteria
  • Identify the regional market for arena use
  • Document the history of arena revenues and expenses
  • Propose an operations alaysis for a two ice sheet facility
  • create an architectural solution indicating building layou, construction style and image.
  • Determine the options for refrigeration

In addition to the analysis, we produced conceptual site and floor plans for the NHL size, refrigerated, year-round ice rink with seating capacity for approximately 600 spectators, six team locker rooms, concession stand, lobby, bathrooms and related support spaces.
